If you like a big viewfinder, you’re going to like what you see when you look through this 18 megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor camera.

In fact, the 7D sports the first EOS viewfinder offering 1.0x magnification and full coverage (versus the 95% coverage offered on the EOS 50D).

The EOS 7D: More Than Just a Slightly Improved Version of the EOS 50D DSLR

This is not just a revised version of the 50D DSLR mind you.

This is the next step up.

The Canon EOS 7D offers a new sensor, a new body, a new 19-point cross-type AF system, and dual Digic 4 processors paired with newly improved shutter mechanics so you action fans can shoot up to 8 frames per second (fps).

Face detection and live view are also included.

The 7D also offers a 63 zone dual-layer metering sensor designed to work with the 19-point AF system to carefully consider the luminosity and color surrounding your chosen AF point to improve your results in tough lighting conditions.

This is a great feature if you shoot in environments where the light is changing rapidly (like a concert) or if you are challenged with shots where the lighting is both very light and very dark.

Add in 1080p HD video with manual controls over aperture and shutter speed, a newly designed 3 inch Clear View II LCD with an ambient light sensor to adjust the brightness for ambient lighting conditions, a new custom controls interface offering you the ability to customize your buttons and controls, and an electronic level that displays both pitch and roll so your shots come out perfectly level and it’s obvious that Canon wants to be on the top of your list if you’re in the market for a new DSLR.

Canon-7D-HDMI-HDAnd what about that HD video?

Well, you can capture 1920 x 1080 resolution at 30p, 24p and 24p frames per second and your HD movies of up to 4 gigabytes will be saved in .MOV.

With HDMI output, you can watch your movies on your high-definition television.  If you’re into shooting video for the web (e.g. YouTube), you’ll enjoy the 1280 x 720 HD video (50p or 60p) or you can always record 640 x 480 SD/VGA video (50p or 60p).

For those of you concerned with shooting in tough conditions, the EOS 7D is environmentally sealed to be dust and water-resistant.

Canon EOS 7D Review Summary

Overall, Canon put a lot of effort into winning your business with the EOS 7D.

The 63 zone dual-layer metering sensor and the 19-point AF system coupled will make shots with difficult lighting much easier to photograph well.

The full coverage viewfinder and the fast 8 frames per second shooting will make shooting action shots much more enjoyable and the extensive control you have over customizing buttons and controls will save time if you like to stray from the normal program modes.

Add in the ability to shoot HD video and the sensor on the LCD which helps you see the screen by adjusting for the amount of light shining on the LCD, and I really like what this camera has to offer for the money.
