Canon Powershot ELPH 300 HS Review

Normally we just review digital SLR cameras, but today I'm doing a Canon Powershot ELPH 300 HS Review because I just took this little point and shoot to the other side of the world with me and I used it in some freezing cold conditions...

And I didn't even have to charge it while I was on my trip.

Canon Powershot ELPH 300 HS Review: Can You Fit Your DSLR In Your Pocket?

Canon Powershot ELPH 300 HS ReviewOne of the challenges of shooting with a DLSR is that there are certain times and situations where it's not exactly convenient to be carrying a big camera and lens. Don't get me wrong, I love shooting with a DSLR and I usually have it with me, but sometimes...

It's very convenient to have a very small camera in your pocket that you can pull out to capture those once-in-a-lifetime moments.

In the past, I took my iPhone to Barbados, Australia, Mexico and all over the United States... and the pictures look pretty good, but after shooting with a DSLR for so long, I felt like I was missing the moment when my iPhone took noisy or blurry photos (...and forget doing big prints with most of the shots), so I decided to get a point-and-shoot.

I chose the Canon Powershot ELPH 300 HS for the following reasons:

  1. It's very light
  2. It's extremely small, so I can put it in my jeans pocket
  3. It has very high reviews from users, a lot of whom are DSLR photographers
  4. It has excellent battery life (which is important when you forget your power adapter in a foreign country)

Canon Powershot ELPH 300 HS Review: Color Options

This camera comes in three different colors: black, grey and red.

I chose black because I wanted this litte camera to "fly under the radar" as much as possible (...the country I visited had pretty strict warnings about taking pictures of "unmarked government buildings.") so I wouldn't stand out or become a target for pickpockets.

Canon Powershot ELPH 300 HS Review: Wrapping It All Up

After using this Canon point-and-shoot for a week in freezing cold and somewhat wet conditions, I love it.

It's extremely small, it takes great photos (in automatic mode, it adapts to the scene you are shooting0, it has a super wide-angle lens (4.3mm) that captures a lot of the scene and in some cases, it took better photos than the super expensive DSLR we had with us on the trip (...mainly because we could quickly pull it out and shoot fast in freezing cold conditions or when we didn't have a tripod).

Oh, I almost forgot - this little camera is great for those hand-held self-portraits because it's so light and has such a wide-angle lens.  We took a lot of photos of ourselves when nobody was around to hold the camera and the photos turned out great.

If you need a backup camera, pick one up today.

Probably worth mentioning that this is marketed as the Canon IXUS 200 HS outside the USA: took me quite a while to find it using the American designation :(
